Jamie Foxx is back and breaking his silence! The superstar, who disappeared from the public eye in 2023 after a life-threatening medical emergency, has revealed the full story in his new Netflix comedy special, What Had Happened Was.
With laughter, tears, and shocking details, Foxx gave fans an emotional rollercoaster as he recounted how he almost lost his life. Let’s dive into the unforgettable night Jamie Foxx told it all!
“I’m Back!” Jamie Foxx Kicks Off His Netflix Comeback
Jamie Foxx burst onto the stage in his usual larger-than-life style, dancing and hyping up the crowd. His first words? “I’m back!” Fans cheered wildly, but Foxx quickly turned serious. “My life was saved just 400 yards from here,” he revealed, pointing to Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital. The crowd fell silent.
A Headache Turns Deadly
Foxx didn’t sugarcoat it. April 11, 2023, started like any other day. He felt a headache and asked a friend for aspirin. “But when it’s a real emergency,” Foxx joked, “your boys don’t know what the f… to do!” … and before he could even take the pill, he blacked out.
“I Don’t Remember 20 Days”
Foxx shared that he was unconscious for nearly three weeks. “I woke up and didn’t know what had happened,” he said. His friends had rushed him to a doctor, but the visit was a bust. “They gave me a cortisone shot and sent me home. What the f… is that? Half a star on Yelp!” he quipped, earning laughs from the audience.
Sister Saves the Day
Foxx’s sister, Deidra Dixon, became his guardian angel. Describing her as “4-foot-11 of nothing but pure love,” Foxx said she immediately knew something was wrong. “She said, ‘Get him in the car. That ain’t my brother right there.’ She drove around, following her gut, and found Piedmont Hospital,” Foxx explained.
There, doctors made a chilling discovery. “He’s having a brain bleed leading to a stroke. If we don’t operate now, he’ll die,” they told Dixon. Foxx didn’t shy away from the raw truth. “My sister knelt outside the operating room and prayed,” he said, choking up. Inside, doctors raced against time to save him.
“I Saw the Tunnel… But No Light”
Being unconscious was strangely peaceful, Foxx admitted. “I saw the tunnel but not the light,” he said. Then, with his signature humor, he added, “It was hot in that tunnel. Shit, am I going to the wrong place? I thought I saw the Devil like, ‘C’mon.’ Or was it Puffy?”
A Grueling Recovery
Doctors warned that recovery wouldn’t be easy. “They said, ‘He might make it, but it’ll be the worst year of his life.’ And they were right,” Foxx said. His sister and daughter Corinne took charge, shielding him from the outside world. “They didn’t want you to see me like that. And I didn’t want you to see me like that,”.
“I Couldn’t Wipe My Own Ass”
Foxx woke up in a Chicago rehab center on May 4. He didn’t understand why he was in a wheelchair or why a nurse had to bathe him. “When she told me she’d been bathing me for weeks, I was like, ‘Damn,’” Foxx joked, adding, “I lost everything, but I held onto my sense of humor. If I could stay funny, I could stay alive”.
A Miraculous Moment
Foxx shared one moment that still gives him chills. His youngest daughter, 14-year-old Anelise Bishop, snuck into his hospital room with her guitar. “She started playing, and my vitals went down. It was God in that guitar,” Foxx said. “That’s my spiritual defibrillator.”
In a tear-jerking moment, Anelise joined her dad on stage with a Rickenbacker guitar. Together, they performed a moving duet that had the crowd wiping their eyes. “You had to make it,” Anelise told her dad. “I always dreamed we’d perform together.”
