Tragic news has surfaced regarding the death of 19-year-old Walmart employee Gursimran Kaur, who was found deceased in a bakery walk-in oven at the Walmart located at 6990 Mumford Road in Halifax, Nova Scotia. According to a GoFundMe organized by a member of the Maritime Sikh Society, the incident took place on October 19. Kaur, who had worked at Walmart alongside her mother for two years, was reportedly last seen by her mother in the store on Saturday, after which she was unreachable by cell phone, sparking immediate concern.
Kaur’s family is now working through the tragic circumstances surrounding her passing, with her father and brother currently in India and making arrangements to travel to Canada. The 6990 Mumford Road Walmart has since been closed until further notice, and a tribute in the form of flowers has been placed on a pole in the store’s parking lot to honor her memory.
When Kaur’s mother realized her daughter had not been seen for over an hour, she reached out to store administrators to help locate her. Tragically, after hours of searching, Kaur’s mother reportedly discovered her daughter’s remains in the walk-in oven, describing them as “charred.”
In a statement to Newsweek, a Walmart spokesperson expressed condolences, saying, “We are heartbroken, and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and her family. Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and ensuring they have the support they need.” The company reiterated its commitment to assisting authorities and providing support to Kaur’s family and coworkers in this challenging time.
A spokesperson for the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service informed Newsweek that they are working closely with Halifax Regional Police to determine both the cause and the manner of death. “The investigation is in the early stages,” the representative shared, “and no further details are available at this time.” The tragedy has inspired a GoFundMe campaign organized by the Maritime Sikh Society to support Kaur’s family.
