Living with MS is hell! Christina Applegate Reveals MS Began on Set

Christina Applegate has opened up about her first signs of multiple sclerosis (MS) while working on the Netflix hit “Dead to Me.” The actress shared her experience during a revealing episode of the “MeSsY” podcast on Dec. 10.

Liz Feldman Praises Applegate’s Dedication

Liz Feldman, the show’s executive producer, praised Applegate’s dedication. Feldman couldn’t stop gushing about how Applegate shaped the series. She recalled the second day of shooting the pilot, particularly a field scene where Applegate set the tone for her character and the entire show.

A Dark Memory from the Set

I remember falling that day,” she said. “Hi, first signs of MS. Not to bring everyone down, but there it was.

Curious, Applegate asked Feldman if she remembered the incident. Feldman’s response confirmed it. “I remember you losing your balance while filming the pilot a couple of times,” she admitted. Feldman thought exhaustion was to blame. “It was late at night, and we had been shooting for 14 or 15 hours. It seemed reasonable that anyone would collapse,” she added.

But Applegate’s explanation was clear. “It was MS,” she said.

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating autoimmune disease. It attacks the myelin, the protective layer around nerve fibers in the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, this condition disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Symptoms and Challenges of MS

The symptoms of MS vary widely. Fatigue, numbness, weakness, and dizziness are common. In severe cases, MS can leave people unable to walk, talk, or even write. For some, the disease causes unbearable pain during flare-ups. The timing and severity of symptoms are unpredictable, making MS a constant challenge for those who live with it.

Applegate’s Diagnosis and Struggles

Unfortunately, there is no cure for MS. Applegate’s diagnosis came to light in 2021. By then, the disease had already begun to affect her daily life and career. She couldn’t walk on her own while filming the final season of “Dead to Me.”

Speaking Out About Living with MS

In a candid interview with “Good Morning America” earlier this year, Applegate reflected on her journey. “My symptoms started in early 2021,” she said. “It began with a tingling sensation in my toes. By summer, I needed a wheelchair to get to the set. I couldn’t walk that far anymore.

A Painful Reality

Applegate didn’t sugarcoat her experience. “Living with MS is hell,” she admitted. “They call it the invisible disease. It’s incredibly lonely. Explaining it to people is tough. I’m in excruciating pain, but I’m used to it now.”

An Inspiring Journey

Despite the challenges, Applegate has shown incredible strength. Her journey inspires many, shedding light on the realities of living with a debilitating disease. For fans, her honesty is a reminder of her resilience both on and off the screen.
