Classic Blueberry Muffin

Blueberry Muffin Recipe: Ingredients, Instructions, Pairings, and Tips

Blueberry muffins are a classic treat, perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert. Here’s how to make moist and delicious blueberry muffins.

Ingredients (Makes 12 muffins)

For the Muffins:

  • 1½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • â…“ cup (80ml) vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • â…“ cup (80ml) milk (plus more if needed)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh or frozen blueberries (do not thaw if using frozen)
  • ½ cup (65g) all-purpose flour
  • â…“ cup (65g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (60g) butter, cold and diced

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Pan

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease the cups.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.

Step 3: Mix Wet Ingredients

  1. In a smaller bowl, combine oil, egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.

Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  1. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture. Stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the muffins dense.
  2. Gently fold in the blueberries using a spatula.

Step 5: Prepare the Crumb Topping (Optional)

  1. Mix flour and sugar in a small bowl.
  2. Add the cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 6: Assemble and Bake

  1. Fill the muffin cups about Â¾ full with the batter.
  2. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the muffins (if using).
  3. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Allow muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Pairings

  • Beverages: Pair with a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of cold milk.
  • Toppings: Serve with a dollop of cream cheese, butter, or honey for extra indulgence.

Tips for the Best Blueberry Muffins

  1. Use Fresh Blueberries if Possible: Fresh blueberries give a burst of flavor and better texture. If using frozen, do not thaw them to prevent the batter from becoming watery.
  2. Coat Blueberries in Flour: Lightly toss the blueberries in a tablespoon of flour before folding them into the batter. This helps prevent them from sinking to the bottom.
  3. Do Not Overmix: Mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing can lead to tough muffins.
  4. Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Bring your egg and milk to room temperature to ensure the batter mixes evenly.
  5. Customize the Topping: Experiment with adding a pinch of cinnamon or lemon zest to the crumb topping for a unique flavor.
  6. Bake at the Right Temperature: Starting at a higher temperature (e.g., 400°F/200°C for the first 5 minutes) can help create a domed top, but be sure to lower it afterward for even baking.

Enjoy your bakery-quality blueberry muffins at home!
