Could Wicked Soar to Oscar Glory?
I wouldn’t be surprised and honestly I hope for them. I had to go to the theater, because my 10 year old wanted to see it. I did not expect much, but wow, was I positively surprised. 3 hours and I didn’t not fall asleep. I always go the showing in the recline seats. Just in case I want to use the time to get some deserved mommy shut eye.
I LOVED IT!!!!!! All aspects, really well done. I can’t wait for the second part.
The buzz surrounding Wicked, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the Broadway sensation, suggests it could be a major contender at the 2025 Oscars. Directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring powerhouse performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the movie’s combination of lavish production design, iconic music, and a built-in fanbase has fueled speculation about its potential to dominate awards season.
Key Elements of the Oscar Buzz
- Performance-Driven Recognition
Cynthia Erivo, portraying Elphaba, has garnered attention for her transformative performance. Her portrayal of the misunderstood green-skinned witch is seen as a strong contender for a Best Actress nomination. Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, may also find herself in the Supporting Actress race, despite being a co-lead, given her nuanced and bubbly take on the Good Witch. - Craftsmanship and Technical Brilliance
The film’s spectacular production design, costumes, and visual effects are expected to be Oscar frontrunners. Chu’s vision brings Oz to life with vivid detail, making categories like Production Design, Costumes, and Visual Effects strong areas for nominations. Its epic musical score, blending Stephen Schwartz’s original compositions with new cinematic orchestration, could also secure nominations in Sound and Original Song categories. - Precedent from Broadway-to-Hollywood Musicals
Hollywood adaptations of Broadway hits have had mixed success at the Oscars. While Chicago won Best Picture in 2003, others like Les Misérables relied heavily on box office strength to secure nominations. If Wicked achieves similar or better critical acclaim, it could land in the prestigious Best Picture category. - Universal’s Strategic Campaign
Universal Pictures is reportedly rolling out an aggressive awards campaign, leveraging Wicked’s existing fanbase and critical anticipation. A planned two-part release strategy also builds intrigue and ensures the franchise stays in the conversation over multiple years. - Potential Hurdles
Early reactions are promising, but the embargo on full reviews until closer to its release raises questions. Critics have noted that while the film has an established fanbase and a nostalgic appeal, its success may depend on how well it overcomes the genre’s formulaic pitfalls.
Will It Fly High?
Experts predict Wicked could secure up to 12 Oscar nominations across categories like Best Picture, Best Actress, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, and technical awards. The film is also expected to perform well at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, providing momentum heading into the Oscars.

Ultimately, Wicked has the potential to dominate the awards season, but its final trajectory will depend on critical reception and box office performance. The film’s combination of beloved source material, stellar cast, and cinematic grandeur makes it a strong contender for Oscar night glory.
